7 click setup of Windows 7 Machine

The entire installation is of Windows 7 x64 bit was a breeze with just 7 mindless clicks. I think even my mom can setup a new windows 7 PC in less than 20 mins.

All you need to do is grab the Windows 7 RC x64bit and/or x32bit from here. the RC is free to try till June 2010. don’t forget to make a note of the windows 7 RC Product keys during the download and registrations process on Windows 7 RC download site.

Download the windows 7 RC bits before June 2009 directly from windows 7 RC site.

burn to a DVD, backup and Clean up one of your Hard disk drives, restart and boot the system with DVD. Install the Windows 7 on to the empty drive.

Thats it, then from here on mindless 7 Next > Next > … clicks and you are done with the whole setup.

check my old post video on how to setup windows 7 VPC, similar steps to follow and in 20 mins or less you have a whole new windows 7 systems up and running for you.

Don’t forget to run windows update after the whole setup, this will update all your drivers seamlessly.

MOSS 2007 and WSS 3.0 SP2 release

MS released the SP2 for MOSS 2007 and WSS 3.0. Grab them here

For New installation grab the slipstream version of

WSS 3.0 with SP2 x86

MOSS 2007 SP2

This release of SP2 was more of performance Tuning, Interoperability Fixes and preparing for SharePoint 2010.

FYI: If you want to include any Service Packs in to the Windows OSes, check out this SP2 Slipstreaming into Windows XP blog or for the latest SP3 Slipstream in to XP installation CD check out this article

Installation Steps

To keep all the files in a SharePoint installation up-to-date, the following packages need to be applied on all servers in the farm. Service Pack 2 contains all fixes released through February of this year, so customers can install it directly on RTM build of the products.

  1. Service Pack 2 for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0
  2. Service Pack 2 for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Language Pack (if applicable)
  3. Service Pack 2 for Office SharePoint Server 2007
  4. Service Pack 2 for Office SharePoint Server 2007 Language Pack (if applicable)

After applying the preceding updates, run the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard or "psconfig –cmd upgrade –inplace b2b -wait” in command line. This needs to be done on every server in the farm with SharePoint installed.  The version of content databases should be after successfully applying these updates.

For more in-depth guidance for the update process, we recommend that customers refer to the following articles. These articles provide a correct way to deploy updates, identify known issues (and resolutions), and provide information about creating slipstream builds.

2 useful features in Vista

The first feature is CLIP which redirects the output of command line tools onto the Windows clipboard. So you can do dir | clip and get the directory listing added to your clipboard.

The second feature is robocopy, which is a familiar utility to many Windows Users. It is a robust way to copy files – so it can recover from network outages and things like that. This useful utility used to be part of the Windows Resource Kit, but now it comes with Vista. More information about this tool can be found here.

4NT – Powerful Command Prompt + My All-Time Favorite Utility

4NT by JPSoft is, in my humble opinion, one of the best apps ever created. It is a tool for the ‘power user’ who appreciats the power of the prompt (C:\>). 🙂 It a console command prompt for Windows on steriods. I’ve used this app for over 14 years and it is still the one non-MS app I use more than any other.
